sailing

Yesterday Brian took all of us girls sailing. We had a game plan if'n one of the babies fell off.

Brian: If one of them falls off, I'll jump in. OK?

Maryann: staring at Brian, thinking about what the heck she's supposed to do with the sail boat seeing as how even after all of the repeated lectures and lessons while sailing over the years she still has NO IDEA how to sail the stupid thing

Brian: All you have to do is blah, blah, blah, blah and blah, blah, blah, then blah blah blah blah. It's real simple.

Maryann: How about, I jump in. You come get us. I'm a strong swimmer.

Brian: Right. You are the better swimmer. (And NOT the better sailor.)

And then Brian also had the foresight to mention to the guys getting our boat together for us (since we were just renting it for an hour, we didn't have to do any of that, nice) that if they saw us flipped over we probably needed help since there were two babies and a pregnant mama. They agreed and recommended he not push it as the wind was pretty strong. Fortunately, I have a thoughtful husband who had already decided that this trip would not be the one to try and get up on one pontoon.

Good thing we had a plan. No one actually did fall off but Rivers was rather determined to and it took quite a bit of effort to keep her with us.

Though excited about climbing on the grounded sailboat beforehand, Cumorah was rather worried about actually being on the water on the boat. She kept telling me she didn't want to ride the boat when we were taking our pre-boat potty trip. I kept trying to assure her that it would be really fun and that we would be safe. When she kept up her protests Brian mentioned, "I guess I have shown her too many exciting sailing clips on you-tube." You think? It's kind of like when we say it looks like a storm is coming and she starts up her whining and nearly crying about how it's not going to blow away her toys and it won't take away the house. That's from too many tornado clips on you-tube when we had a tornado warning.

Sure enough, she did have a fun time when we were out on the lake and aside from constantly repeating, "Rivers not going to fall off?" she was fairly comfortable. Rivers did not especially enjoy the experience because she had to wear a ridiculously bulky life jacket and was rudely being restricted in where she could wander to. But she did enjoy hanging over the edge and she did enjoy sitting up on one of the wings with me.

It was a lovely afternoon. We had a picnic lunch before we got on the boat. The weather was perfect. In fact, it was rather chilly and very windy during our picnic, but it warmed up enough to be comfortable for all of us when we were getting on the water. Brian was pleased. He had to sell his hobie-cat before coming to school. Oh the sacrifices a med-student with a growing family makes... But it's totally worth it honey, right? He still laments the fact that his two year old has not been windsurfing yet, but I'm pretty sure I want her to know how to swim before he gets her out on a board.

ps I'll post a few pics soon. We didn't have the nice camera but we did take one.
