happy may day

The lilacs are blooming. I love the lilacs. There are quite a few around here. Yesterday was a good day full of May Day surprises. I wanted to do something special with the girls so we made cookies. (I know cookies aren't really like flowers but what's a holiday without treats?) We made peanut butter cookies. I haven't made peanut butter cookies for probably close to five years. Brian doesn't eat peanut butter. I thought it was high time Cumorah had a homemade peanut butter cookie. She had a fun time rolling the balls and smashing them with a fork. We also had to make a half batch of chocolate chocolate chip cookies so that Daddy could eat some cookies, too. Then we made a paper cone May basket and a flower out of netting, a pipe cleaner and a sparkly pom pom. We took it to school for Brian when we met him for lunch. Cumorah was really excited. "Daddy, a May Basket! Cookies!" I had to explain. Brian doesn't have prior experience in May Day traditions. Actually, most of us don't. I don't think it's a really big holiday in our country. I had plans to make up baskets for the neighbors too, but I ended up being so nauseous that I couldn't eat dinner. Usually, I'm able to force myself to eat because it gets worse if I don't eat, but last night was particularly bad, a popsicle and sour jolly ranchers kind of evening. Next year.

The best part of the day were the two surprises we got at home in the afternoon. When we pulled into our driveway after lunch, we saw a bright yellow paper cone May basket hanging on our doorknob! As I was getting the girls out of the car and preparing to walk to the front of the house to check it out, Cumorah could hardly contain her excitement, "I so surprised!" It was perfect, we had just finished giving a May basket to Daddy and then we got a May basket given to us from 'our friends'. It turned out to be a basket of assorted childcrafted paper flowers from a Lutheran church and school just down the street. So fun, we loved it. Later that day while the girls were sleeping, I was shocked to see the florist pull into our driveway and bring us a beautiful basket of flowers. They were from Grandmommy and were the cherry on top to our special day.

I'm excited it's May. Spring is really here. Three cheers for warm weather!

You're the only one I know who celebrates May day. I still have the vase the carried the flower you gave me 4 years ago in honor of May day. It's holding an avocado seed, waiting to root.
